Farmers in the Sdoor area of Boulemane Province were left shocked and frustrated following news of the suspension of a vital irrigation canal project meant to water their agricultural lands. According to local sources, the project’s halt is due to financial issues linked to its allocated budget.
The irrigation canal is considered a key infrastructure project, heavily relied upon by local farmers to irrigate their crops. With the suspension of the project, farmers now face major challenges that could severely impact their harvests and jeopardize their livelihoods — especially in light of the difficult climatic conditions marked by drought and ongoing climate change.
In this context, several farmers expressed growing concern over the consequences of this interruption on their agricultural future. They emphasized that the canal had represented a significant hope for tackling climate challenges, and its halt now threatens to worsen their situation and increase their hardship.
Other residents stressed the urgent need for relevant authorities to intervene and find swift solutions to ensure the resumption of the project and protect their livelihoods from imminent risks.
