New Wave of COVID-19 Sweeps Southeast Asia: Is the Virus Making a Comeback?

Southeast Asia, particularly Hong Kong and Singapore, is experiencing a worrying surge in COVID-19 cases, triggering warnings of a potential resurgence of the virus as summer approaches. This increase brings back memories of the pandemic that shook the world years ago, but health authorities assure that the situation remains under control.

Hong Kong: New Wave and Sharp Rise in Infections

In Hong Kong, health authorities have announced that the city has entered a new wave of virus transmission. Data indicates a rise in the average daily infections from 102 to 133 cases in recent weeks. The Centre for Health Protection also recorded a significant increase in the percentage of positive samples, from 1.7% in mid-March to 11.4% currently, surpassing the peak of August 2024. These figures reflect an acceleration in the virus’s spread, prompting authorities to intensify surveillance efforts.

Singapore: Rising Cases and Mask Recommendations

In Singapore, the Ministry of Health revealed a 28% increase in estimated infections, reaching 14,200 cases during the week ending May 3, 2025, compared to the previous week. This update marks the first official report in about a year, reflecting the seriousness of the situation. Hospital admissions also rose by 30%, although authorities affirm that the situation does not currently warrant alarm. In light of this increase, authorities have recommended wearing masks in public places as a precautionary measure.

Declining Immunity, Not New Strains

Authorities in Singapore clarified that the increase in infections is not linked to the emergence of more severe or rapidly transmissible variants, but rather to a decline in population immunity. The LF.7 and NB.1.8 sub-variants, both descendants of the JN.1 strain, are the most prevalent, accounting for over two-thirds of genetically analyzed cases. These variants, despite their spread, do not show evidence of higher severity compared to previous strains.

Warnings with Cautious Optimism

Despite the rise in infections, health authorities in both cities affirm that the situation is under control, with close monitoring of developments. This wave is attributed to seasonal factors and declining immunity, rather than radical changes in the virus’s nature. As summer approaches, calls are increasing for enhanced health vigilance, including booster vaccinations and adherence to preventive measures.

Is the Virus Coming Back?

The current surge in infections raises questions about the potential return of COVID-19 as a global threat. However, data indicates that this wave, despite its severity, does not reflect a return of the pandemic with the same intensity previously witnessed globally. The current focus is on strengthening community immunity and preparing to face any potential developments.
