Baghdad: Syrian Foreign Minister, Assad Al-Shibani, today, Saturday, in Baghdad, expressed his country’s sincere gratitude and appreciation to His Majesty King Mohammed VI for his decision to reopen the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Damascus.
This statement came during a press briefing by the Syrian Foreign Minister on the sidelines of his discussions with Mr. Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, on the fringes of the 34th Summit of the League of Arab States, which commenced its proceedings today. Al-Shibani affirmed that Moroccan-Syrian relations are “very good,” expressing thanks to His Majesty and the Moroccan government for their “interest in developing these relations, which we aspire to be economically and investment-wise outstanding in the Arab world.”
Historic Royal Decision Enhances Bilateral Relations
King Mohammed VI had announced in his high address to the Arab Summit the Kingdom of Morocco’s decision to reopen its embassy in Damascus, which was closed in 2012. His Majesty affirmed that this decision “will contribute to opening wider horizons for the historical bilateral relations between our two brotherly countries and peoples.”
In his speech, His Majesty reiterated the Kingdom’s steadfast position regarding Syria, which His Majesty had previously expressed in his message to President Ahmad Al-Sharaa, and which consists of “supporting the resilient Syrian people in achieving their aspirations for freedom, security, and stability, and preserving Syria’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty.”
Practical Steps for Embassy Reopening and Exchange of Technical Delegations
In the context of implementing the Royal decision, Mr. Nasser Bourita announced that a Moroccan technical delegation would visit Syria next week to assess the necessary arrangements for the embassy’s reopening. Bourita confirmed that the embassy “will be a channel for communication and coordination in various fields” between the two countries.
For his part, Syrian Foreign Minister Assad Al-Shibani announced that he would also send a technical team to reopen the Syrian Embassy in Rabat, in a reciprocal step that underscores both countries’ desire to fully resume and develop diplomatic relations.
