Housing Minister Comments on the Collapse of the Building in the Hassan Neighborhood in Fes: “The Building Was Classified as High-Risk and Evacuated, but Some Refused to Leave”

Fatima Zahra Mansouri, Minister of National Territory Planning, Urbanism, Housing, and City Policy, stated that the residential building that collapsed on the night of Thursday-Friday in the Hassan neighborhood, the Marinine district of Fes, was classified by local authorities in 2018 as one of the high-risk buildings slated for demolition.

In a press statement, Mansouri confirmed that evacuation measures were taken at that time, with eight families complying with the decision. However, five other families refused to leave the building despite repeated warnings.

Efforts by civil protection teams continue intensively to recover victims from the rubble of the collapsed building in the Hassan neighborhood (Ben Dabbah) in Fes, amid an atmosphere of sorrow and anticipation among local residents.

According to official health data, the death toll from the incident has risen to nine people, while seven others are still receiving treatment at the hospital, including three children whose health conditions range from stable to critical. Among the victims, eight died at Al-Ghassani Hospital, while the ninth passed away at Ibn Al-Khatib Hospital despite the medical team’s interventions. The condition of the injured is described as ranging from stable to critical, reflecting the severity of the incident and its profound impact on the community.

The building had previously been classified by local authorities in 2018 as one of the high-risk buildings likely to collapse. Although evacuation measures were taken at that time, with only eight families responding to the decision, five other families continued to refuse to leave the building.

In this context, local and security authorities have increased their presence in the area to secure the zone, and an initial investigation has been launched to determine the exact causes of the building’s collapse and identify potential responsibilities.

Many residents of the neighborhood have expressed their deep sorrow over the loss of their neighbors and relatives, emphasizing the urgent need to address the deteriorating housing situation in the city. They stress the importance of regular maintenance of old buildings and providing swift solutions to protect citizens’ lives.
