Trump Declares: Houthis Surrendered, US Strikes to Cease

Washington: US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that the United States will halt its strikes against Houthi positions in Yemen, following the Yemeni movement’s agreement to cease its attacks that disrupt vital shipping lanes in the Middle East.1

Trump stated that the Houthis “surrendered” and asked the United States to stop bombing them, confirming they would cease maritime attacks.2 “The Houthis confirmed they will not bomb American ships,” he said, citing Reuters.3

Trump did not disclose the specifics of the message he received from the Houthis, but stated, “They said: Please don’t bomb us anymore, and we won’t attack your ships.” The US President indicated that “Washington will believe the Houthis’ promise” not to target ships anymore.4

No comment has been issued by the Houthis thus far.

Trump’s statements came during his reception of the new Canadian Prime Minister, Marc Carney.5

The Houthis have been attacking Israel and shipping vessels in the Red Sea since Israel’s military campaign in Gaza began, following Hamas’s attack on Israeli settlements on October 7, 2023.6

On Sunday, the Houthis threatened to impose a “comprehensive” air blockade on Israel by intensifying attacks on its airports.7

Tensions escalated after a Houthi-launched missile landed near Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport on Sunday, prompting Israel to launch airstrikes on Yemen’s Hodeidah port on Monday.8

The Houthi-affiliated Ministry of Health reported that Israeli strikes near Yemen’s Hodeidah port on Monday resulted in 4 deaths and 39 injuries.9

The Israeli military also targeted Yemen’s main airport with airstrikes on Tuesday, marking its second attack in two days against the Houthis.10 The Israeli military announced it had carried out over 20 strikes in various regions of Yemen, confirming it targeted the passenger terminal at Sanaa airport and all aircraft within, completely disabling the airport.11

The Houthis are part of the Iranian-backed “Axis of Resistance,” which also includes the Lebanese Hezbollah and Hamas, known for its opposition to Israeli and US interests in the Middle East.12
