The session of oral questions in the House of Representatives, held this Monday morning, turned into a heated confrontation after Abdel Rahim Shahid, leader of the Socialist Group, sparked an intense debate regarding the absence of several ministers from accountability sessions. He considered this neglect of parliamentary duties, revealing the names of the absent ministers.
In a notable move, Shahid read out the names of six ministers whom he claimed were “regularly absent.” These ministers include: Nadia Fattah, Minister of Economy and Finance; Hicham Sabri, Secretary of State for Employment; Omar Hajira, Secretary of State for Foreign Trade; Fatima Zahra Ammor, Minister of Tourism; Zakia Driouch, Secretary of State for Fisheries; and Karim Zidan, Minister of Investment.
Shahid argued that the repeated absences had become a serious issue, damaging the government’s image and hindering institutional communication between the legislative and executive branches. He added, “We have no choice but to speak out, as silence has been ineffective.”
Attempts by members of the majority to justify the ministers’ absences did not resonate with the session’s president, Mohamed Ouzzine, who intervened to cut off the debate, stating that it was the president’s responsibility to address the issue of absenteeism. This stance raised concerns among some MPs.
However, the real spark of tension came when the Istiqlal party MP, Farfar, made provocative gestures towards the president, prompting an angry response from Ouzzine, who used a colloquial term to describe the MP as “this type,” a remark that caused outrage in the room.
The verbal confrontation nearly ended the session, but thanks to calming interventions, both MP Farfar and President Ouzzine offered apologies, and the session resumed after a break of approximately seven minutes.
This incident reignites the debate about the relationship between Parliament and the government, and the degree to which ministers respect their accountability schedules within the legislative body, particularly in a context marked by rising political tensions.
