Tales and stories are told by the residents of the ancient city of Fes, with each person sharing what they have heard from their ancestors about the only grave located on the road to Bab Mahrouk leading to the famous Boujloud Square in Fes.
This is where the story of the solitary grave begins, sitting in a large plot of land, causing passersby to look at it in curiosity, wondering why it exists all alone.
The Mysterious History of the Grave…
According to previous reports by Fes News…
The tales passed down by our ancestors suggest that the story of this unknown and solitary grave dates back to the reign of the late King Hassan II, may he rest in peace. At that time, the land on the road to Bab Mahrouk was a cemetery containing hundreds of graves. By royal decree, all the graves were to be relocated, and work began to remove them. Some families moved their loved ones to other locations, but the unknown grave remained. No one questioned its existence, and it was decided to remove it using a machine known as a “Traks” in Morocco. However, the machine would inexplicably stop working whenever it neared the mysterious grave. The workers overseeing this operation were baffled and could not find a solution to remove the grave, which seemed to be completely attached to the ground. The story of the mysterious grave reached King Hassan II, who decided to visit the site and oversee the operation himself. Despite numerous attempts, the result remained the same. The king then made the decision to restore and preserve this grave, placing a ceramic plaque with the name “Al-Makhfi” on it. Since then, passersby have wondered about the identity and story behind this lone grave, a mystery that only history can answer.
Different Stories, One Question: Who is the Owner of This Mysterious Grave?
Our curiosity led us to visit this mysterious grave located in a vast open area, seeking more information about it. As we approached, we noticed that the grave, which is over two meters long, is beautifully constructed and inscribed on its front: “This is the grave of the deceased, the righteous saint, known as Sidi Al-Makhfi. To God we belong and to Him we return.” It is said that the grave was originally marked as “Unknown Grave.”
In a nearby corner, we noticed a person resting amidst spring flowers under the bright sun. We approached him and asked about the story behind this mysterious grave.
Here, the stories began…
The person woke up and, after a brief pause, said, “He was a great man, said to be a saint from the righteous of God’s saints many centuries ago. He was tall, around two meters, and passed away right here in this very spot, and was buried here. He is indeed a righteous saint.”
We raised our eyes and saw several families gathering in the area to enjoy the sunny weather. We approached two women and, after greeting them, asked them the same question. The answer was surprising: “The cemetery was removed along with the other graves, but when the new day arrived, this grave reappeared in the same place—it rebuilt itself.”
This was a true shock, and our curiosity grew even more to find out which version of the story was the most accurate.
We sat with local women and listened to their stories. The first woman said, “From what I’ve heard, there’s a hidden treasure, and whoever tries to approach it will be cursed and struck by something unexpected. The people here are terrified of getting too close.” The second woman said, “The worker who oversaw the removal of the grave became paralyzed.” The third woman stated, “The person buried here was the owner of the land, and it’s clear he was a righteous man, a saint of God.”
After hearing all the stories and circulating rumors, we decided to share all the versions of the mysterious grave’s tale with you. On our way back home, we passed by an elderly man and asked him the same question. He told us some of the stories we had already heard from others, but what stood out was that he referred to “Al-Makhfi” as a woman, not a man. He was the only one to describe the figure as a woman.
This raises the main and lingering question: What is the true story of Al-Makhfi…?
