Vatican City – Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, represented His Majesty King Mohammed VI at the funeral of Pope Francis, held this Saturday morning in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican.
The funeral was attended by a large number of heads of state and government to bid farewell to Pope Francis, who passed away last Monday at the age of 88.
Following the funeral mass, the body of Pope Francis was transferred to the Basilica of St. Mary Major in central Rome, where he was laid to rest according to his wishes.
In the wake of Pope Francis’s death, His Majesty King Mohammed VI sent a message of condolence and sympathy to Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, at the Vatican.
In his message, His Majesty expressed his “deep sorrow” at the loss of “a distinguished religious figure who devoted his life to serving the lofty principles of humanity as a whole, and the ideal values of faith, freedom, peace, love, and solidarity among the various peoples.”
His Majesty also recalled “with reverence the historic visit made by the great departed of the Church to Morocco in March 2019, which strengthened and consolidated the distinguished nature of the strong relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Vatican, and thus constituted a strong pillar for continuing to build and strengthen bridges of dialogue, understanding, and mutual respect between the Christian and Islamic worlds.”
