On November 21, 2024, trade unions and professional associations representing the large taxi sector in the city of Fès submitted an official request to meet with the Governor of the Fès-Meknès region. The goal: to discuss a set of long-standing and unresolved issues affecting workers in the sector.
According to the letter—of which Fes News received a copy—the meeting aims to address the urgent demands of professionals and find practical solutions, particularly given the difficult circumstances currently facing the industry.
The signatory bodies emphasized that grand taxi drivers are experiencing “severe frustration” due to the authorities’ delay in seriously addressing their concerns, which continues to negatively impact their professional and social stability.
Key points raised for discussion include:
- Activation of the 2019 ministerial decision regulating relations between drivers and law enforcement at taxi stations.
- Legal and operational issues surrounding the use of the main bus terminal by grand taxis.
- The growing phenomenon of illegal transport, particularly within city limits, which professionals view as a direct threat to their livelihood.
- The increasing number of “tourist vehicles” operating as transport services in violation of current laws.
- Accumulated social issues, including access to health coverage, retirement schemes, and support for fleet renewal.
Drivers also expressed frustration over their “neglected” demands during previous meetings, clarifying that their goal is not escalation, but rather serious and responsible dialogue to reach lasting solutions that safeguard their dignity and interests.
The letter concluded with a strong appeal for urgent intervention by local authorities to ease tensions and prevent further deterioration in the sector.
The document bore the signatures of several unions and professional associations—including the General Confederation of Taxi Drivers, the Moroccan Workers’ Union (UMT), the General Union of Moroccan Workers (UGTM), and the Al Amal Association—demonstrating a united front in facing the challenges ahead.
