Fes News has learned from professional sources that fish prices at the central market of Fez have seen a significant increase in recent days, causing discontent among citizens. This price surge has particularly impacted families who rely on fish as a staple in their diet, further straining their purchasing power.
According to available data, this increase is attributed to several factors, primarily the decline in fishing activity during certain periods due to weather conditions, as well as the biological rest periods for some fish species, leading to reduced supply amid rising demand. Additionally, speculation and the lack of effective oversight in the wholesale market have exacerbated the situation, as some middlemen take advantage of market needs to unjustifiably drive up prices.
The prices of several seafood varieties have reached record levels, with Corb fish selling at 80 MAD per kilogram, Meagre ranging between 100 and 130 MAD, Shrimp exceeding 100 MAD, and Squid reaching 130 MAD. Even popular fish like Sardines and Anchovies have not been spared from these increases, with prices ranging between 12 and 15 MAD, adding to consumers’ financial burden.
Industry professionals have pointed out that this crisis stems from the disorder in Fez’s wholesale fish market, where crates of fish are resold multiple times at increasing prices before reaching consumers, due to the absence of strict regulations preventing such practices. They also highlighted that rising transportation costs and fuel prices further contribute to the higher costs of fish, which directly affects the final retail price.
Sector stakeholders are calling for stricter oversight of wholesale markets and the implementation of firm measures to curb speculation. They also advocate for more transparent mechanisms in seafood distribution to stabilize prices and protect citizens’ purchasing power.
