Fes News has learned from informed sources that the city of Fez is preparing to host the second phase of the 2025 Regional Games, a major sporting event that reflects the national commitment to integrating individuals with intellectual disabilities through sports. This event is organized under the supervision of the Moroccan Special Olympics (SOM) from April 8 to 10, with broad participation from athletes and volunteers.
The Regional Games aim to create a competitive environment tailored to the athletes’ abilities while promoting values of exchange, respect, and self-improvement. This initiative aligns with the vision of King Mohammed VI, which emphasizes social inclusion and the use of sports as a tool for development and collective well-being.
In a statement issued by the organizing committee, the Moroccan Special Olympics reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities by providing a suitable sports framework and raising societal awareness about equal opportunities. In this context, Zineb Lahrab, the national director of the Moroccan Special Olympics, stated that “the Regional Games are a living example of what societies can achieve when inclusivity is placed at the heart of their priorities.”
According to the same source, the Fez competitions will feature approximately 350 participants, including 300 athletes from the Eastern region. They will compete in various disciplines, including 50m and 100m races, long jump, shot put, swimming over different distances, as well as boccia, table tennis, and tennis. These competitions will take place at prominent sports venues such as the Higher Institute of Sports Sciences, the covered swimming pool of Batha, and the Fassi Sports Club, under the supervision of qualified referees and specialized medical teams to ensure the safety of the athletes.
Beyond the competitive aspect, the Regional Games will include a series of awareness and parallel programs, such as the “Health Messages” program aimed at promoting health awareness among athletes, the “Young Athletes” program designed for children to develop motor skills in a fun way, the “Motor Activity Training Program” (MATP) tailored for individuals with physical disabilities, and the “Family Health Forum”, providing a space for discussions on health issues and community support.
These games are part of a national series covering the northern, eastern, southern, and western regions, selecting the best athletes who will qualify for the Moroccan Special Olympics National Games and potentially advance to international competitions. Following this phase, attention will turn to Guelmim from April 23 to 25 and then to Casablanca from May 21 to 23, continuing this dynamic approach that establishes sports as a tool for development and social inclusion.
The Moroccan Special Olympics is a sports organization dedicated to enhancing the participation of individuals with intellectual disabilities in sports activities through competitions and support programs that empower athletes and promote their social integration. It operates within a vision that positions sports as a means to achieve comprehensive development and social justice.
