Wildfires that erupted in the southeastern U.S. state of North Carolina have consumed over 800 hectares of land, according to authorities.
At least two fires were reported on Sunday in Polk County, located in western North Carolina.
The state’s Public Safety Department issued an evacuation order on Saturday evening for residents in areas of Polk County.
In a social media post, the Public Safety Department urged residents in the affected areas to evacuate immediately to avoid being trapped, warning that “visibility will decrease” and some roads may be closed.
In neighboring South Carolina, Governor Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency to combat wildfires that broke out in Pickens County.
Firefighters are continuing their intensive efforts to control the fires and prevent their spread, amidst challenging weather conditions that are exacerbating the situation.
