Royal Air Maroc (RAM) has announced its transformation into the first Moroccan company to operate a fully electric vehicle fleet, reaffirming the group’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact and enhancing sustainability.
According to a statement from the company, the group has begun replacing traditional fuel-powered vehicles with fully electric cars. The first phase of this transition has been successfully completed across Royal Air Maroc, its airport services subsidiary RAM Handling, and its branch RAM Express. The statement noted that these companies have now become the first in Morocco to operate a 100% electric vehicle fleet.
The statement added that this transition will enable the group to reduce its carbon emissions by approximately 400 tons annually, while improving operational efficiency and lowering fleet management costs. The first phase involved replacing nearly 200 vehicles (including compact cars and utility vehicles) with electric models.
The group acquired these vehicles through “Leader Location,” a subsidiary of the Auto-Hall Group, under long-term leasing contracts. The new electric fleet is distributed across the company’s headquarters in Casablanca, as well as the airports of Casablanca, Rabat, Oujda, Fez, Agadir, Marrakech, Dakhla, Laayoune, Al Hoceima, Tetouan, Errachidia, Essaouira, Tangier, and Nador. The second phase will include airport assistance vehicles.
On this occasion, Hamid Addou, CEO of Royal Air Maroc, stated that the company is “proud to achieve one of its key goals as part of its voluntary efforts to combat global warming.” He added, “This important step aligns with our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitments, which we will continue to strengthen to achieve our goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.”
To ensure the success of this transition, the group has provided all necessary infrastructure and investments, including the installation of approximately 70 charging stations across various sites, most of which are solar-powered. Additionally, charging solutions have been implemented to allow vehicles to recharge at designated stations during intercity trips, offering greater flexibility and optimized charging cost management.
This initiative is part of a series of measures launched by the group under its CSR policy, such as generating electricity through solar panels, reducing energy consumption in its facilities, and recycling waste. Royal Air Maroc was also the first African airline to operate a carbon-neutral flight using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), as well as the first sustainable flight connecting Africa to Europe.
The company has received numerous prestigious certifications and environmental labels, the most recent being the CSR label awarded by the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM). Additionally, the company’s buildings, including an industrial hangar, are the first in Africa to achieve the “LEED GOLD” environmental certification.
