On Tuesday, the city of Fez experienced significant rainfall, causing traffic disruptions on several main roads as water accumulated, turning some streets into pools and small streams.
Fes News observed the situation at Imouzzer Road, near its intersection with Avenue Chella, close to Rida Mosque, where blocked drainage systems led to severe flooding, creating water formations resembling rivers that hindered both vehicle and pedestrian movement.
This is not the first time heavy rainfall has caused traffic issues in Fez. In previous years, similar incidents have occurred, with poor drainage systems turning major roads into flood zones, frustrating both residents and drivers who struggle to navigate the city’s streets after heavy downpours.
Each rainy season, calls resurface for local authorities to take preventive measures, such as maintaining drainage networks, cleaning gutters, and reinforcing infrastructure to ensure proper water flow and prevent recurring urban flooding. However, some areas continue to suffer from infrastructural vulnerabilities, making a comprehensive review and long-term solutions necessary.
Like many other Moroccan cities, Fez faces challenges in modernizing its drainage system, leading to prolonged traffic disruptions whenever extreme weather conditions strike. Until sustainable solutions are found, these repeated issues will persist.
