The Kingdom of Morocco and the French Republic committed on Monday in Rabat to strengthening their cooperation in the legal and judicial fields as part of deepening the strategic and historical partnership between the two countries.
This commitment was formalized through the signing of a Joint Declaration between the Minister of Justice, Abdellatif Ouahbi, and his French counterpart, Gérald Darmanin, during their meeting. The meeting provided an opportunity to conduct an in-depth review of the progress made in legal and judicial cooperation between the two countries, explore future prospects for this collaboration, and discuss issues of mutual interest.
This Declaration is the result of discussions that began during the development of the action plan signed on May 31, 2024, which incorporates strategic priorities of paramount importance, including the fight against terrorism and organized crime.
In this regard, the two ministers emphasized the strategic importance of this axis, which represents a major threat both nationally and internationally, significantly affecting the sovereignty, security, economy, environment, and development of both nations.
Consequently, France and Morocco reaffirmed their shared commitment to intensifying efforts to address these phenomena by mobilizing the necessary resources, including those related to the legal framework.
Regarding the modernization of the judicial system and the strengthening of its governance, the ministers also agreed on the importance of continuous training for professionals in the sector, the implementation of programs dedicated to improving administrative management and legislative development, as well as the exchange of expertise in all areas related to justice.
During this meeting, Ouahbi and Darmanin expressed their satisfaction with the quality of bilateral relations, highlighting the exceptional momentum of cooperation in the judicial and technical fields between France and Morocco, which addresses contemporary challenges and the shared interests of both nations.
Emphasizing the long tradition of trust and solidarity that unites the two nations, the ministers underscored the Franco-Moroccan legal and judicial cooperation, which is based on a common legal model, nurtured by a vibrant “judicial Francophonie” and close human ties, consolidating shared interests and deep solidarity.
Speaking on this occasion, Ouahbi stated that this meeting allowed both parties to reach an agreement on all pending issues, expressing his conviction about the promising future of judicial cooperation between the two countries.
The signing of this declaration will pave the way for re-examining certain agreements, particularly the one regulating the role of lawyers in France and Morocco, to achieve a balance in this regard, he noted.
“We have also examined ways to facilitate the daily lives of Moroccans residing in France, particularly in matters of personal status and family rights,” he emphasized.
For his part, Darmanin affirmed that the signing of this Joint Declaration is a strong sign of enhanced cooperation, praising the leading role of Moroccan magistrates and their efforts alongside their French counterparts in the fight against terrorism and drug trafficking.
He also expressed his willingness to continue improving the working conditions of officials from both ministries, particularly in terms of digitization and modernization of the judicial system.
The two Ministries of Justice will also work to simplify the lives of citizens of both countries by supporting the implementation of civil reforms and improving their relationship with the public justice service, he added.
