Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares has reiterated his country’s support for the proposal of autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as a solution to the Sahara conflict, noting that this position is widely supported within the European Union.
This statement came during an interview with the Spanish newspaper El País, where Albares emphasized the need to find a mutually agreed solution between the parties after more than 50 years of ongoing conflict.
Albares confirmed that Morocco is a strategic partner for Spain and the European Union in several areas, particularly in combating irregular migration, tackling organized crime, and countering terrorism. He pointed out that all EU countries recognize this strategic relationship, highlighting the strong trade ties between the two nations. He explained that the volume of trade between Morocco and Spain now competes with the trade levels recorded with the United States and the United Kingdom.
In a related context, the Spanish minister referred to the positive developments in bilateral relations, including the reopening of trade customs in Melilla and the establishment of a customs office in Ceuta for the first time in history, reflecting the strength of their bilateral cooperation.
When asked about Spain’s position on the autonomy proposal, Albares confirmed that Spain’s stance is clear and unwavering, as expressed in the joint Spanish-Moroccan declaration, and it enjoys the support of the majority of EU countries.
Observers believe these statements reflect the strategic importance of the relationship between Morocco and Spain, particularly in addressing regional security and economic challenges. They also strengthen Morocco’s position in its diplomatic efforts to find a final resolution to the conflict, based on the autonomy initiative that is increasingly gaining international support.
