A 3.6 Million Dirham Project for Traditional Crafts in Fes-Meknes: Success Hinges on Transparency and Good Governance

The Fes-Meknes region is preparing to approve a partnership agreement aimed at preserving endangered traditional crafts and trades, with a total budget of 3.6 million dirhams. This initiative is a collaboration between the Ministry of Tourism, Handicrafts, and Social and Solidarity Economy, the Fes-Meknes Regional Council, the Wilaya of Fes-Meknes, Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah University in Fes, and the regional Chamber of Handicrafts.

As part of the second strategic axis of the 2022-2027 Regional Development Program, the project aims to safeguard the intangible cultural heritage linked to traditional crafts, document and classify endangered trades, and develop training programs for young people to transfer traditional skills and knowledge.

Titled “The Moroccan Handicraft Treasures Program,” the project will be implemented in several phases. It includes an inventory and documentation of ten endangered crafts and the selection of 100 trainees to learn traditional skills from 10 master artisans considered as national craft treasures. The training will last for 10 months, during which each trainee will receive a monthly stipend of 1,000 dirhams, while the mentoring artisans will be granted 7,000 dirhams per month.

Although the project carries noble objectives of heritage preservation and job creation, its success remains dependent on transparency and good governance at every stage of its execution. Observers emphasize the need for strict monitoring mechanisms to track progress, evaluate results, and ensure that the allocated budget is utilized optimally to achieve the stated goals.

The Steering Committee, chaired by the Wali of Fes-Meknes, plays a crucial role in this regard. It is responsible for defining the project’s strategic directions, overseeing its implementation, and addressing any challenges that may arise. Additionally, the Regional Technical Committee is expected to submit regular reports detailing project progress and assessing goal achievement.

Fes News welcomes any initiative aimed at enhancing good governance and transparency within this project. It calls for public disclosure of the Steering Committee’s periodic reports, allowing the public to monitor the commitment of stakeholders in fulfilling the agreement’s terms effectively.

There is hope that this initiative will serve as a model for successful development project management in the region, contributing to the preservation of Morocco’s rich artisanal heritage and providing job opportunities for youth—rather than becoming just another promising title added to the list of projects that failed to deliver their intended impact.
