France Announces Review of All Agreements with Algeria and Sets a Deadline of One to Six Weeks

French Prime Minister François Bayrou announced on Wednesday that France will request the Algerian government to “review all agreements signed between the two countries and how they are being implemented,” setting a deadline of “one to six weeks” for Algeria to respond.

Bayrou stated that the agreements signed between France and Algeria in 1968 “have not been respected,” emphasizing that the French government “cannot accept the continuation of this situation.” He added that Paris will present an “urgent” list of individuals who must return to their country, whom France considers “particularly sensitive cases.”

The French Prime Minister warned that “if there is no response in the end, the only possible option will be to terminate these agreements,” while stressing that France “does not wish to reach that point.” He said, “I say this without any desire to escalate or exaggerate, but it is the responsibility of the French government to assert that the refusal to readmit Algerian citizens constitutes a direct violation of the agreements signed with the Algerian authorities, and we will not accept this.”

Bayrou also announced a request for a “comprehensive government review” of France’s visa policy, tasked to the general inspectorates of the police and foreign affairs.

These statements came during a press conference following a meeting of the Interministerial Committee on Immigration Control (CICI) at the French Prime Minister’s office. The request for the review was signed on Tuesday evening and directed to the general inspectorates of the police and foreign affairs.

Tensions between the two countries have been escalating in recent weeks, as Algeria has repeatedly refused to allow the entry of several of its citizens deported from France. Relations, already strained, further deteriorated after the deadly attack that occurred on Saturday in Mulhouse, eastern France, where a 37-year-old Algerian residing illegally is accused of killing a 69-year-old Portuguese man and injuring seven others.
