France Announces Sanctions Against Algeria and Prepares for Additional Measures

The French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, announced the imposition of “restrictive measures on the travel and access to French territory for certain Algerian dignitaries,” indicating his readiness to take “additional measures” amid the diplomatic crisis with Algeria. This came during an interview with BFMTV, where he justified these steps by Algeria’s refusal to accept some of its citizens expelled from France, including the attacker involved in the Mulhouse incident, as well as the case of the arrest of Franco-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal.

Barro explained that these measures are “reversible and will end as soon as the cooperation we seek resumes.” However, he affirmed that if no positive developments occur, he is “prepared to take further measures.” He also expressed his readiness to “visit Algeria” if it would help “resolve a number of pending issues.”

Nevertheless, the French minister adopted a more moderate stance compared to his colleague, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, who called for a “power struggle” with Algeria. Barro stated, “It is not always with the toughest tools that we achieve results. In fact, we have observed in the past that when we toughened our rhetoric with Algeria, the number of deportations decreased.”

These statements come amid escalating tensions between the two countries, with France accusing Algeria of failing to cooperate in accepting its expelled citizens, while the arrest of writer Boualem Sansal has sparked widespread criticism in French circles.
