Haboub Cherkaoui, director of the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation, revealed on Monday, during a press conference held at the bureau’s headquarters in Salé, the details of the dismantling of a terrorist cell linked to the Sahel-Saharan region.

He explained that this cell, which was dismantled last week, received direct orders from Abdel Rahman al-Sahrawi, a Libyan, one of the leaders of the ISIS organization in the region, to carry out terrorist and sabotage operations inside Morocco, and videos showing this data were shown during the seminar, which was followed by Telexpress from the scene.

Cherkaoui added that Abdel Rahman al-Sahraoui al-Libi was responsible for providing the cell members, numbering 12 people so far, with an arsenal of weapons found in Wadi al-Naam near Boudnib, on the outskirts of Rachidia, which were wrapped in newspapers issued in Mali, dating back to January 15 and 27, 2025.

The director of the OCIJ noted that Morocco has been targeted by ISIS in the Sahel-Saharan region due to its active role in fighting terrorism at the African and international levels, and emphasized that the monitoring and tracking of this cell lasted for a year before the arrest of its members.

Regarding the educational level of the detainees, Cherkaoui explained that only one of them reached the first year of university, while eight of them did not go beyond high school, while the other three did not complete their preparatory schooling.

The OCIJ is currently holding a press conference to provide updates on the case, following the dismantling of the cell last week in several cities across the Kingdom. The operation resulted in the arrest of 12 extremist elements, followed by the discovery of a support base for the cell in Oued El Naam, where firearms, including Kalashnikov rifles and pistols, were seized.
