Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa has rejected a request submitted by Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf to release “Polisario” elements detained in Syria, following their support for the Bashar al-Assad regime in the city of Aleppo.
Informed sources stated that Ahmed Attaf used his visit to Syria to convey a request from Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune for the release of “Polisario” detainees arrested by the Syrian group Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham.
However, the Syrian President categorically rejected this request and asked Attaf to inform President Tebboune that “500 soldiers from the Algerian army and/or Polisario militias will be tried like soldiers of the Assad regime.”
These developments come amidst political shifts in the region, and Algeria’s efforts to maintain a role in the Syrian arena, especially after Morocco’s recognition of the new Syrian president. Attaf’s visit to Damascus had raised questions about its objectives and timing, especially in light of the Moroccan-Syrian rapprochement.
Observers believe that the Syrian President’s rejection of the Algerian request represents a blow to Algerian diplomacy and reflects the changes in the balance of power in the region. Some also believe that this rejection may affect Algerian-Syrian relations in the future.
