On Thursday, February 6, 2025, Fes News covered the events of a communication meeting held at the Conference Palace within the Traditional Industry Complex in Fez. The event was attended by Lahcen Saadi, the Secretary of State in charge of Traditional Industry, Social Economy, and Solidarity, alongside several officials and professionals from the traditional crafts sector, including Naji Fakhari, President of the Traditional Industry Chamber for the Fez-Meknes region.
During the event, certification diplomas for traditional Zellij (mosaic tilework) were awarded to a group of artisans. This initiative aims to enhance the value of this rich cultural heritage and strengthen its presence in both national and international markets.
In his statement, Lahcen Saadi emphasized that Zellij Fassi is an authentic Moroccan heritage that enjoys global recognition and requires continuous support for artisans dedicated to preserving and showcasing it. He also noted that the ministry is implementing programs to improve production conditions, ensure the availability of raw materials, and provide appropriate financial support tailored to the needs of traditional craftsmen.
Furthermore, the Secretary of State revealed several upcoming projects in Fez, including the rehabilitation of traditional craft centers in the historic city and Ain Nokbi, as well as the development of the Handicrafts Complex, which is expected to play a crucial role in attracting tourists and showcasing the skills of local artisans.
Saadi also highlighted that Fez, as a historic city preparing to host major sports events such as the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup, must elevate its traditional crafts sector to meet the occasion. He added that these international events present a valuable opportunity to showcase Morocco’s rich heritage to the world and enhance the global presence of traditional craftsmanship.
