The Chamber of Traditional Crafts for the Fez-Meknes region held a meeting this week at its regional headquarters in Fez, where President Naji Fakhari welcomed a group of artisans specializing in the production of the traditional engraving tool used in zellige tile carving. The meeting was attended by his deputies and chamber members, including Mohsen Hamama, Anwar Asal, Ibrahim Mastour, Abdel Nasser Al-Omari, Abdel Halim Al-Fizazi, Mohamed Bouidou, and Hassan Boukarn.
The discussion focused on the challenges faced by artisans in this sector, which is at risk of disappearing due to declining demand and insufficient support mechanisms. Participants highlighted the impact of this crisis on the traditional zellige industry, as the engraving tool is essential to this craft, which is an integral part of Morocco’s cultural heritage.
To preserve this profession, the chamber decided to support artisans in establishing a professional cooperative, enabling them to organize more effectively and secure the craft’s future. Additionally, they emphasized the need for sustainable solutions to protect and pass down the skills to new generations, preventing the craft from becoming obsolete.
This meeting aligns with the chamber’s ongoing efforts to safeguard traditional crafts in the region and ensure their continuity, recognizing the vital role of craftsmanship in the economic and cultural fabric of Morocco. President Fakhari stressed the importance of collaboration between artisans and supporting institutions to secure the future of this profession and preserve it as an integral part of Moroccan identity.
