Yesterday evening, Tuesday, January 21, an important meeting was held at the Fes City Hall, attended by various local and international stakeholders, including ONU Femmes, the Association for Women’s Rights Initiatives, civil society representatives, and the Fes Private University. The meeting focused on enhancing safety and improving conditions for women and girls in public spaces across the city, aiming to position Fes as a model for social and spatial safety.
In an exclusive statement to Fes News, Abdel Salam El Bekkali, President of the Fes Municipal Council, emphasized that this meeting is part of ongoing efforts to ensure a secure and comfortable environment for women and girls in the city’s public spaces. He highlighted that the initiatives presented during the event address challenges such as inadequate lighting and the absence of suitable urban transport services in some areas.
The meeting featured a significant presence of participating entities who presented field research findings conducted in the “Sidi Jnah” area. These findings underscored several critical points requiring urgent attention, including insufficient lighting in certain areas and unsafe pathways, as well as transportation challenges, particularly due to the lack of Bus Line 53, which has greatly impacted residents’ mobility.
The session also showcased strong engagement from women participants, who expressed their concerns and needs clearly, providing practical suggestions to improve current conditions. Attendees commended the crucial role played by civil society organizations and their international partners in supporting these efforts, stressing the importance of continued collaboration to achieve tangible results.
In closing, Abdel Salam El Bekkali reiterated the municipal council’s commitment to addressing the outlined challenges, noting that the efforts underway will yield visible results soon, particularly in enhancing transport services and ensuring safety in neighborhoods and public spaces.
