Fes Liquid Sanitation Project: A 400 Million MAD Investment Transforming Infrastructure and Sustainability

The city of Fes is embarking on a groundbreaking liquid sanitation project with a total investment of 400 million MAD. The initiative centers around establishing a main treatment complex for wastewater and rainwater along Oued Fes, marking a strategic step toward improving wastewater management, reducing flood risks, and preserving the environment. This ambitious project also aims to meet the increasing demands brought about by rapid urban expansion.

The project includes the installation of a state-of-the-art tunnel network stretching 14 kilometers and reaching depths of up to 40 meters. The first phase, dedicated to constructing the main Oued Fes canal, is approximately 20% complete and has a budget of 200 million MAD. This phase features massive tunnel infrastructure, measuring 4 meters in both width and height, and reaching depths of 32 meters. It aims to address critical issues such as decommissioning the wastewater pumping station in Dekkarat and reducing wastewater flow into Oued Fes, thereby bringing a significant improvement to the city’s ecological system.

Two additional phases are set to commence in 2025. The second phase will focus on protecting the historic Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, by redirecting wastewater away from its ancient walls, safeguarding its architectural and historical value. The third phase will involve constructing a new high-capacity complex to cater to the southwestern districts of Fes, which are experiencing significant urban growth.

This project aligns with Fes’s comprehensive vision for infrastructure development, preparing the city to host major international sporting events, including the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 FIFA World Cup. By combining technological innovation, environmental preservation, and cultural heritage conservation, Fes is positioning itself as a leading example of sustainable urban development and a forward-thinking urban hub.
