The year 2024 witnessed several significant political events in Morocco, strengthening the Kingdom’s strategic role on the international stage and affirming its commitment to reinforcing its internal front and enhancing its democratic journey.
Among the most important events was France’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara. French President Emmanuel Macron announced in a letter to King Mohammed VI on July 30 that “the present and future of the Western Sahara fall within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.” This was followed by an official visit by Macron to Morocco in October, during which he reaffirmed France’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara before the Moroccan Parliament.
King Mohammed VI also launched an important Atlantic Initiative to break the isolation of Sahel countries, aimed at promoting cooperation and sustainable development in the region. This initiative was warmly welcomed by Sahel countries, with foreign ministers from Morocco, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and Chad holding a meeting to activate the royal initiative.
On the domestic front, King Mohammed VI granted a royal pardon to several journalists and human rights activists who were detained for various reasons, in a move considered a gesture towards openness and reconciliation.
The year also saw a cabinet reshuffle that led to the formation of the Akhannouch II government, aimed at enhancing government effectiveness and addressing political, economic, and social challenges. This reshuffle was interpreted as a signal from the King in favor of youth and competence, with younger and more dynamic figures entering the government.
2024 marked the 25th anniversary of King Mohammed VI’s ascension to the throne, during which Morocco witnessed important changes that strengthened its position on the international stage and supported internal reforms. These events reflect the image of Morocco as an evolving country, keen on its influence and internal and external stability.
