Benkirane Defends Integration of Religion and Politics, Urges Moroccans to Uphold Faith and National Values

During a speech at a rally organized by the Justice and Development Party (PJD) in the city of Fes on Sunday, Abdelilah Benkirane, the party’s Secretary-General, addressed issues surrounding religion, politics, and the role of faith in the resilience of nations. Benkirane openly criticized advocates for separating religion from politics, arguing that such calls aim to weaken national identity and strip nations of one of their greatest sources of strength.

Benkirane emphasized that religion is an inseparable part of politics in Morocco, highlighting that this integration has been the foundation of the country’s stability throughout history. He asserted that attempts to separate religion from politics are attempts to undermine the core of Morocco’s identity, stating, “Religion is not just an individual ritual; it is the pillar that unites Moroccans in facing challenges.”

He also spoke about the Moroccan monarchy and its historical role, affirming that the king has been the Commander of the Faithful for centuries. He stressed that this title is not just a religious symbol but a manifestation of legitimacy and continuity. He noted that the relationship between the people and the king is based on mutual trust grounded in religious and national values.

Benkirane highlighted the power of faith in God as a key factor in Morocco’s resilience, citing the country’s history in confronting colonialism. He pointed out that the Moroccan people were only able to expel the colonizer by uniting under the legitimate King Mohammed V and responding to the call for jihad that originated in Fes, leading to the country’s independence in 1956.

In discussing the situation in the region, Benkirane addressed the Syrian crisis, considering it a clear example of what happens when a country loses its fundamental elements of strength. He stated that the loss of faith and social cohesion leads to collapse, reaffirming that what shields Morocco from crises is its adherence to its religious values and national constants.

In conclusion, Benkirane urged Moroccans to remain steadfast in their faith and national values, stressing that these principles are the guarantee for Morocco’s continued strength in the future. He reiterated that Morocco will remain a model that balances religion and politics in a unique way that preserves its identity and stability.
