Amid ongoing challenges facing the educational system in the Ain Chkak area of the El Hajeb Province, the local office of the National Union of Education Employees, affiliated with the National Union of Labor in Morocco (UNTM), has issued a statement expressing deep concern about the deteriorating educational conditions in local schools, particularly at Abi Salem Al-Ayashi Secondary School, which is experiencing unprecedented overcrowding.
The statement, issued following a meeting on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, highlighted that Abi Salem Al-Ayashi Secondary School is struggling to accommodate the increasing number of students, with a total of 2,623 students spread across 62 classes, some of which have up to 47 students. This situation contradicts educational guidelines that set the maximum number of students per class at 37. The union emphasized that such overcrowding makes the school environment unsuitable for effective teaching and negatively impacts both teacher performance and student learning outcomes.
The statement further noted that the crisis extends beyond overcrowding, exacerbated by a shortage of administrative staff. There is only one general supervisor for every 1,200 students, which complicates the organization of lessons and the provision of adequate student support. This situation has led to a noticeable decline in student performance, as reflected in lower grades on assessments, which could result in disastrous outcomes in upcoming final exams.
While the union acknowledged the efforts of the regional education director in expanding the school offering through unprecedented financial allocations and the development of new properties for construction, delays in the initiation of new school construction projects, such as the Al-Akhir Ghazal Middle School and Ibn Nafis High School, remain a significant barrier to addressing the crisis. The union considers these projects to be the only hope for alleviating the pressure on schools in the area.
In conclusion, the local office called on the relevant authorities to intervene promptly to expedite the construction of new educational institutions and provide the necessary human resources to ensure a conducive learning environment that enhances the quality of education and improves student performance.
