Morocco Launches “Riaya” Initiative to Address Winter Challenges in Rural Areas

In a proactive move aimed at addressing the challenges of the winter season, the Regional Directorate of Health and Social Protection in the Fes-Meknes region has launched the 10th edition of the “Riaya” initiative for 2024-2025.

This initiative is in line with the royal directives focused on providing essential care to populations affected by cold waves and snowfalls, targeting over 121,000 people from mountainous and remote areas who face difficult health conditions due to the dropping temperatures.

Launched on November 15, 2024, the Regional Directorate has implemented a comprehensive health plan running through March 2025 to ensure continuous healthcare services in the isolated regions of the area. This initiative covers the most affected provinces, including Sefrou, Boulemane, Ifrane, Taounate, Taza, and El Hajeb, which experience severe drops in temperatures, at times reaching below freezing, further exacerbating health challenges for the population.

The core of this plan is to provide integrated healthcare services by enhancing both fixed and mobile healthcare facilities. Specialized health teams have been assigned to provide multiple medical services across 92 healthcare institutions in these areas, in addition to 23 mobile medical units and 27 fully-equipped ambulances. The goal of this initiative is to bring healthcare services closer to citizens in hard-to-reach areas and address their urgent needs quickly and efficiently.

As part of this plan, specialists, general practitioners, nurses, and health technicians, along with administrative teams, are overseeing the operation on the ground. The mobile health teams are scheduled to carry out 430 field visits to mobile units, ensuring comprehensive coverage of all targeted areas, especially those that are severely isolated due to heavy snowfalls.

Regarding the provision of medicines, additional funding has been allocated for necessary medications and medical supplies, which will be distributed free of charge to patients. The medicines provided will address seasonal illnesses resulting from the cold, in addition to offering medical services such as screening for chronic diseases and providing appropriate treatments to patients in mountainous areas. Measures have also been taken to monitor pregnant women, with a registry of pregnancies and transportation to equipped healthcare facilities when needed.

Moreover, the plan includes awareness and sensitization campaigns to educate the population about the dangers of the cold and preventive measures. Coordination with local authorities will ensure a rapid response when needed, whether for the quick transport of injured individuals or the provision of urgent medical supplies.
