Morocco Allows “Starlink” and “OneWeb” to Provide Satellite Internet Services

Rabat – The National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency in Morocco is preparing to grant licenses to “Starlink”, a subsidiary of “SpaceX”, and “OneWeb” to provide satellite internet services starting in 2025.

This step aims to improve coverage and provide high-speed internet services in remote areas that suffer from weak traditional telecommunications infrastructure. Satellite internet technology is an innovative solution to provide wide coverage and superior connection quality in areas where it is difficult to provide ground-based internet networks.

The internet speeds offered by “Starlink” range from 100 to 500 Mbps, with a low latency ranging from 20 to 40 milliseconds, making it an excellent option for many applications, including video games and online conferences, where response speed and connection quality are critical.

The “Starlink” satellites also allow coverage of wide geographical areas, including mountains and deserts, making it an ideal solution for regions that are difficult for terrestrial telecommunications companies to reach. This is expected to enhance communication services across Morocco, particularly in areas with limited internet services.

Despite the significant advantages, this technology faces challenges, the most important of which are the high costs of equipment and monthly subscription fees. Additionally, the network requires launching thousands of satellites to achieve global coverage, and the system may face challenges due to frequency congestion in high-population areas, as well as concerns about interference with other satellites and its impact on astronomy.
