Rabat/Algiers – The cyberspace has witnessed a dangerous escalation in tensions between Moroccan and Algerian hacker groups, after the Moroccan group “Phantom Atlas” retaliated against a previous cyberattack that targeted Morocco’s “National Social Security Fund” (CNSS).
The Moroccan response involved hacking the website of the Algerian “Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security” and the database of the “Public Employee of Post and Telecommunications” (MGPTT), with “Phantom Atlas” publishing thousands of documents belonging to Algerian citizens and institutions via a Telegram channel.
As of today, Thursday, April 10, 2025, reports indicate that this operation is part of a series of reciprocal attacks that began with the hacking of Moroccan systems on April 8, 2025, by “JabaRoot DZ,” a group attributed to Algeria. This initial breach resulted in the leakage of sensitive data belonging to millions of Moroccan employees and companies.
In a swift and direct response, “Phantom Atlas” announced its infiltration of Algerian systems in less than 24 hours, claiming to have published 13 gigabytes of data, including personal and administrative documents.
This escalation in cyberattacks reflects the broader political tensions between Morocco and Algeria, with cyberspace becoming a new arena for conflict between the two countries. “Phantom Atlas” described its operation as a “calculated and direct response,” stating in a statement that any future provocation from the Algerian side would be met with a “disproportionate” reaction.
The published data allegedly includes sensitive information revealing “mismanagement” within the targeted Algerian institutions, although there has been no official confirmation of these claims from the Algerian authorities so far.
This escalation raises concerns about the widening scope of these cyberattacks and their impact on the digital infrastructure and national interests of both countries, requiring vigilance and caution from the relevant authorities to confront this growing type of threat.
