France strongly condemned on Tuesday what it described as a “new unacceptable provocation” following the visit of Israeli far-right National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem, where he performed prayers along with thousands of others.
In a statement issued by the French Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Paris called on the Israeli government to take all necessary measures to ensure respect for the historical status quo at Jerusalem’s holy sites. France also emphasized the importance of Jordan’s role in this regard, noting that the Jordanian Islamic Waqf Department is responsible for managing the site, despite Israeli forces controlling its entrances.
The statement stressed the urgent need to implement the two-state solution, emphasizing the importance of establishing a sovereign and viable Palestinian state. France urged Israeli and Palestinian political leaders to make a voluntary and courageous commitment to peace.
These French statements come amid escalating tensions in the region and reflect international concern over recent events in occupied East Jerusalem and fears of their repercussions on the Middle East peace process.
The French response underscores the ongoing diplomatic efforts to maintain stability in the region and the international community’s commitment to preserving the status quo at Jerusalem’s holy sites. It also highlights the continued support for a two-state solution as a path to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
