Microsoft revealed in a post on its blog on Saturday that the global technical failure that caused widespread disruptions in airports, banks and many other services on Friday has… Affected 8.5 million Windows computers.
“We currently estimate that the CrowdStrike software update has affected 8.5 million Windows devices, less than 1% of all Windows devices in the world,” the cloud computing giant explained. The company added that although the percentage is low, the significant economic and social impacts observed reflect the use of CrowdStrike by companies that manage many critical services.
The malfunction was caused by an update to CrowdStrike’s cybersecurity software, which turned out to be incompatible with the Windows operating system, the most popular in the world. This disruption led to the cancellation of thousands of flights, and the disruption of the work of many hospitals, departments, factories and television channels, among other services.
David Weston, vice president of Microsoft’s IT group, confirmed that the incident was “not Microsoft’s business.” He explained the measures his company had taken, such as deploying hundreds of engineers and experts to help organizations affected by the disruption.
“CrowdStrike helped us develop a widely deployable solution that will allow Microsoft’s Azure cloud infrastructure to accelerate patching of defective updates,” Weston added.
Microsoft, the second largest cloud services provider in the world after Amazon and before Google, indicated that it cooperated with its main competitors to exchange information about the impact of the problem on their industry.
Many experts have confirmed since Friday that the scale of the failure revealed the risks associated with the concentration in the cybersecurity and cloud computing sectors, where in the event of a software defect, millions of computers could be immediately affected.
This incident highlights the interconnected nature of the global technology ecosystem, and raises questions about the need to strengthen security and compliance mechanisms in the IT industry to avoid such large-scale disruptions in the future.
