The Moroccan Federation of Press Publishers issued a strongly worded statement announcing its categorical rejection of the government’s draft law on reorganizing the media sector, describing it as “authoritarian and unilateral decisions” that threaten professional freedoms and violate the principle of democratic dialogue. The statement emphasized that the Federation rejects any law imposed without prior consultation with professional organizations, affirming that the current project neither respects the Constitution nor provides sufficient guarantees to protect the profession from arbitrary interference.
The Federation accused the government of “regression” and “intransigence” in its dealings with media bodies, noting that these policies directly contribute to fragmenting the professional community and undermining the credibility of national media. It clarified that its position enjoys broad support from human rights, social, and political organizations, including the National Human Rights Council and the Economic, Social and Environmental Council, in addition to unions and parties calling for respect for professional independence.
The Federation revealed a concrete move consisting of its legal advocacy today before the National Press Council against the law, announcing the formation of a “dynamic coordination” comprising professional organizations to confront the project. It outlined its key demands: abolishing the provisional committee currently managing the sector, calling for new elections to the National Press Council to ensure genuine representation, and stressing the necessity of respecting the principle of “self-regulation” for the profession, free from any government oversight.
This escalation comes amid a two-year crisis between the government and media unions, where the latter accuse authorities of attempting to impose control over the media landscape through laws restricting freedom of expression and ignoring legitimate professional demands. The Federation concluded its statement by affirming it would continue its struggle “in defense of press independence and professionals’ right to freely elect their representatives.”
