Interior Minister Laftit Warns Against Exploitation of Charitable Aid for Electoral Purposes, Vows Strict Action

Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit affirmed that his ministry will not tolerate any exploitation of charitable aid distributions during religious occasions for narrow electoral gains, emphasizing the need to preserve the humanitarian and solidarity nature of charitable work.

In a written response to a parliamentary question posed by MP Mohamed Walzin of the Movement Party, Laftit explained that the Interior Ministry’s services closely monitor to ensure transparency and the charitable character of aid distribution. He noted that local authorities have legal powers to object to or halt any distribution process that violates legal provisions or threatens public order.

The minister highlighted that Law No. 18.18, regulating the collection of donations and distribution of charitable aid, enacted along with its implementing decree in April 2025, aims to enhance transparency and governance in the charitable sector and ensure that support reaches rightful beneficiaries within a clear legal framework.

Laftit detailed that the law imposes strict procedures including prior declaration of operations and monitoring of the use of financial and in-kind resources. He stressed that the law embodies the spirit of social solidarity promoted by the royal directives, encouraging simplification of procedures and fostering humanitarian initiatives while protecting donors and beneficiaries from any political or partisan exploitation.

MP Mohamed Walzin had previously raised alarms about some political parties exploiting Ramadan and religious occasions by distributing aid conditioned on filling out forms or joining political organizations, describing this as a violation of the dignity of vulnerable families and a breach of ethical political conduct.

Laftit concluded by affirming that the Interior Ministry will firmly confront any attempts to capitalize on citizens’ hardships for electoral gains, underscoring that charitable work must remain free from political manipulation, with strict enforcement of the law against any deviation from the goals of humanitarian solidarity.
