Minister of the Interior Ends Speculation: No Early Elections, Constitutional Deadlines are “Non-Negotiable”

Abdelouafi Laftit, Minister of the Interior, confirmed that the upcoming local elections will be held on their scheduled date, firmly ruling out any intention to bring the date forward or merge them with the legislative elections, as was done in 2021.

This statement came during the Minister’s address to the Committee of the Interior in the House of Councillors on Monday, in the context of discussions surrounding a draft law on local authority taxation. Laftit explained that the current context does not call for any changes to the electoral calendar, citing the stability of state institutions and their commitment to the democratic process.

In the same context, the Minister denied the rumors circulating about a possible redrawing of the electoral map, affirming that the current territorial division will remain in effect for the upcoming elections, in accordance with the legal and regulatory frameworks in place.

Regarding recent calls to bring the election date forward as a cost-saving measure, the Minister stressed that the Kingdom is committed to respecting its constitutional principles and electoral deadlines. He emphasized that these deadlines are a fundamental pillar in reinforcing democratic practices.

Laftit also took the opportunity to defend local elected officials, criticizing what he described as “digital campaigns” targeting some of them. He announced that the Ministry of the Interior is prepared to offer legal support to elected officials who are subjected to defamation or reputation-harming campaigns, provided they submit an official request.

The Minister’s clarification comes amid rising speculation over the potential scenarios surrounding the next elections, with some political factions calling for a reconsideration of how or when they should be organized. These calls, however, have been met with a firm rejection from the government.
