Decision Threatens to Displace Thousands of Families: Controversy Over the Cancellation of Outsourcing Contracts for Security and Cleaning in the Health Sector

The National Union of Private Security, Cleaning, and Cooking Workers, affiliated with the Democratic Confederation of Labor (CDT), is preparing to address a letter to the Minister of Health and Social Protection regarding the recent decision to cancel several existing outsourcing contracts, particularly in the fields of security and cleaning.

In a press statement, Lubna Najib, the union’s general secretary, acknowledged some positive aspects of the decision, especially regarding compliance with the minimum wage. However, she warned of its negative consequences, particularly for a large number of private security guards. Najib highlighted that new hiring conditions now require a specific level of education, which could exclude many experienced workers from retaining their jobs, despite having over ten years of professional experience in some cases.

The union official stressed the need to implement continuous training programs for these workers instead of dismissing them, warning that enforcing the new regulations could destabilize social conditions. She also revealed that official data estimates the number of private security guards nationwide to be close to one million, with projections suggesting an increase to 1.5 million in the near future.

In response to the decision, Abdellah Bouanou, head of the Justice and Development Party’s parliamentary group, criticized the move in a Facebook post. He argued that the decision, supported by the Prime Minister, aims to award outsourcing contracts to specific companies. Bouanou further claimed that the cancellation of existing contracts was carried out unlawfully, potentially compromising the quality of security and cleaning services in health institutions and worsening conditions for both patients and healthcare workers.

Amid these developments, the union awaits a response from the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, as concerns continue to grow over the impact of this decision on a significant segment of security and cleaning workers.
