The Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Mauritania have announced the opening of a new border crossing linking the Amgala region in the Laayoune Province of Morocco to the Bir Moghrein region in Mauritania. This strategic crossing comes as part of efforts to strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries and support African integration into the global economy, in line with King Mohammed VI’s initiative aimed at providing direct access to the Atlantic Ocean for Sahel countries, including Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Chad.
The new crossing aims to facilitate trade and investment flows between Morocco and Mauritania, while also enhancing economic ties with Sahel countries seeking access to Atlantic ports. This project is part of broader efforts to improve regional infrastructure, including the RN17 national road, which spans 93 kilometers between Smara and the Mauritanian border and is reportedly 95% complete according to official reports.
The inauguration of the crossing comes amid geopolitical tensions in the region, which could impact Algeria’s relations with neighboring countries, particularly following previous statements about isolating Algeria if it continues its alliances with Tunisia. This project reflects Morocco’s commitment to supporting stability and development in the region through enhanced economic cooperation and infrastructure development.
The new crossing represents a significant step toward achieving regional economic integration and supporting large-scale infrastructure projects that facilitate the movement of goods and people between countries. It also underscores Morocco’s commitment to King Mohammed VI’s initiative to promote African integration into the global economy and support sustainable development in the region.
On this occasion, the Moroccan and Mauritanian governments expressed their hope that this crossing will enhance bilateral and regional cooperation, contributing to efforts aimed at achieving stability and prosperity in the region.
