At the African Union Executive Council meeting in Addis Ababa, Moroccan delegations reiterated King Mohammed VI’s vision that the Kingdom seeks to give leadership to the African continent, not to take it. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Nasser Bourita, stressed that Morocco aims to empower Africa to lead, citing the Royal Speech before the 28th Summit of the African Union in 2017.
Bourita pointed out that the Kingdom’s participation in the elections for the new leadership of the African Union stems from a sense of responsibility and the desire to provide competencies capable of enhancing the organization’s position, not from a motive of hegemony. He affirmed that this participation reflects a deep commitment to African unity and the noble causes of the continent and its citizens, and embodies the directives set by King Mohammed VI.
Bourita also stressed the need for leaders capable of alleviating bureaucracy, making management more transparent and connected to African reality, improving field efficiency, and breaking down barriers between AU bodies. He explained that without strong and determined leadership, the desired goals may remain just wishes.
These statements reflect Morocco’s continued commitment to promoting South-South cooperation and supporting sustainable development in Africa, while emphasizing the importance of the continent taking the lead in facing challenges and achieving prosperity for its people.
