Morocco’s Electricity Production Rises by 2.3% in 2023

The National Electricity Regulatory Authority of Morocco has announced an increase in the kingdom’s electrical power production by the end of 2023, with output reaching 42.38 terawatt-hours, marking a growth of 2.3% compared to the previous year.

Despite this positive growth in overall production, coal-powered plants experienced a decrease in their output by 6.6%. Nevertheless, these plants continue to play a pivotal role in Morocco’s electricity generation, contributing about 64% of the country’s total electrical production.

This development comes as part of Morocco’s ongoing efforts to diversify its energy sources and enhance its capacity to meet the growing demand for electricity. The rise in overall production indicates growth in consumption and an increase in economic activity, while the decline in coal plant production reflects a trend towards more sustainable energy sources.

It is worth noting that Morocco is striving to increase the share of renewable energies in its energy mix while maintaining grid stability and ensuring security of supply. These efforts are expected to continue in the coming years, potentially leading to further changes in the structure of electricity production in the kingdom.
