Quebec MP of Moroccan origin Marwah Rizqy and Moroccan-Canadian MP Monsef Derraji have received distinguished recognition in the annual ranking of the best elected officials in Quebec, published by the newspaper “La Presse”.
Marwah Rizqy, who was elected to the National Assembly of Quebec in 2018 and re-elected in 2022, won the title of Parliamentarian of the Year for 2024, a title she shares with Monsef Derraji and Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette. Rizqy, a mother of two, has announced that she will not seek a new term and will withdraw from political life in 2026 for family reasons.
Born in Montreal to Moroccan parents, Rizqy holds a PhD in tax law and was a professor at the University of Sherbrooke before entering politics. She expressed pride in her success in politics despite her modest background, encouraging Quebecers of all origins to believe in their place in Parliament.
Monsef Derraji, born in Marrakech, was elected as an MP for the Nelligan riding in 2018. He holds a PhD in public health from the University of Montreal and currently serves as the deputy leader of the official opposition and Liberal spokesperson for health and social services. Derraji was previously recognized as a “rising star” in La Presse’s ranking in 2019 and has received several distinctions in subsequent years.
This recognition highlights the significant contribution of these two politicians of Moroccan origin to Quebec’s political life, reflecting the diversity and inclusion within Quebec’s National Assembly.
