Moroccan Parliament Discusses the Negative Impacts of TikTok on Society

During its session on November 26, 2024, the Moroccan House of Councillors engaged in an in-depth discussion on the adverse effects of the TikTok platform on Moroccan society, particularly among youth. The debate focused on the challenges posed by the misuse of social media and the cultural and social issues threatening the ethical and religious values of the community.

Members of the council expressed concerns that TikTok has largely become a tool for spreading triviality, deviance, and unethical behaviors, especially among young individuals pursuing fame and quick profits without considering the moral consequences. They emphasized that this phenomenon reflects a broader crisis in managing digital transformations and their negative repercussions.

Responding to these concerns, the Minister of Culture highlighted the government’s multi-faceted approach to addressing this issue. He noted ongoing dialogues with TikTok to ensure respect for Morocco’s cultural and social particularities, adding that the company has agreed to establish an office in the country. Additionally, the Minister mentioned efforts to collaborate with other Arab nations to form regional alliances, thereby strengthening their negotiating position with social media corporations, which he described as “quasi-states” due to their significant influence.

The Minister underlined the pivotal role of families in monitoring children’s and youths’ use of social media, calling it the first line of defense against harmful content. He also stressed the need to enforce laws against fake news and online defamation while encouraging victims to seek legal recourse when necessary.

The discussion concluded with a consensus that tackling this phenomenon requires more than governmental policies and legislation. It demands active involvement from families, schools, religious leaders, and civil society. The Minister advocated for awareness campaigns to educate the public about the dangers of misusing social media and to promote positive and constructive use of these platforms.
