The National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM) is preparing to issue the first call for tenders in 2025 for the Moroccan segments of the Atlantic African gas project, marking a preliminary step towards implementing this strategic initiative.
The project will initially focus on Morocco, Mauritania, and Senegal, with additional agreements for gas transportation expected to be signed next year. The office also plans to establish a private company to manage the construction, operation, and maintenance of the pipeline in the future.
The project spans 5,600 kilometers with a total estimated cost of $25 billion and will cover 16 countries, most of which are along the Atlantic coast. The pipeline will include 1,672 kilometers within Moroccan territory and will be connected to the Morocco-Europe gas pipeline and the European gas network.
The project aims to serve over 340 million people, enabling gas-importing countries to secure their supplies, while gas-producing countries can easily sell their surplus.
According to media sources, the project may eventually include a pipeline for transporting green hydrogen in addition to natural gas, in response to future renewable energy needs.
