Marrakech International Film Festival to Launch 21st Edition Under the Theme “The Dawn of Global Cinema”

Under the theme “The Dawn of Global Cinema,” the Marrakech International Film Festival is preparing for its 21st edition, set to take place from November 29 to December 7, 2024.

This prestigious cinematic event will feature over 70 films from 32 countries, offering both Moroccan and international audiences a unique cultural experience that highlights diverse artistic selections reflecting the fresh perspectives of filmmakers from around the world.

The films will be spread across several sections, including the official competition, celebratory screenings, special screenings, “The Eleventh Continent,” a panorama of Moroccan cinema, youth and family screenings, as well as films presented in the context of tributes.

The official competition will showcase 14 films representing the new generation of directors, offering works from various genres, including drama and documentaries. The festival will also feature 12 films that have benefited from the support of the “Atlas Workshops,” launched by the festival in 2018.

Among the participants is Moroccan director Said Hachimi with his film “The Distant Sea” and director Hind Meddeb with her film “Sudan, Oh Beloved.” Additionally, a number of international filmmakers will present films addressing contemporary human issues, such as the Ukrainian film “Under the Volcano” and the Somali film “The Village Next to Heaven.”

This edition will also include celebratory screenings of works from notable figures such as Nabil Ayouch with “In Love with Toda” and David Cronenberg with “The Shrouds.” The festival will honor several cinema personalities, including Naima Al-Mashreqi and Sean Penn.

In addition to the competition, the festival will feature 12 films showcasing Moroccan cinema, along with a selection of films aimed at children and young audiences in the “Youth and Family” section. The festival continues its commitment to presenting innovative and distinctive cinema that highlights societal issues and contemporary life.
