The Laayoune Youth Athletic Club is set to host the 24th edition of the “International Half Marathon of Laayoune” on Sunday, November 3, under the auspices of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
This event commemorates the 49th anniversary of the Green March and will feature participants from various African, European, and Arab countries, alongside top Moroccan athletes specializing in this distance.
This year’s event will also include races for children and youth over distances of 3 and 5 kilometers, as well as a special women’s race, providing an opportunity for as many participants as possible to celebrate this national occasion.
The International Half Marathon of Laayoune is recognized by the International Association of Athletics Federations, highlighting the quality of its organization and the reception facilities that meet international standards.
Bad Blahi, the president of the club and the organizing committee, confirmed that this sporting event is being organized with support from various entities, including the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra Regional Authority, the Regional Council, and several partners and sponsors.
The organizing committee aims to adopt the latest digital technologies to accurately time participants according to international federation standards, while improving reception and accommodation conditions for athletes.
In the previous edition held in 2023, Olympic athlete Ibrahim Sharbo from Bahrain took first place, while Kenyan runner Emilly Charbit set a new record in the women’s race.
With over 5,000 registered participants, including athletes from the armed forces and national security, this edition promises to be a unique sporting experience that reflects the growth and development witnessed by the city of Laayoune across various fields.
