According to the Moroccan news website “LeDesk”, French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to express France’s new position on the Sahara issue in a letter to be published on the occasion of Morocco’s Throne Day on July 30.
Although no official announcement has been made by the French government yet, Algeria has rushed to condemn what it described as France’s support for the autonomy plan defended by Morocco in Western Sahara.
In an official statement, the Algerian government expressed its deep regret and strong disapproval of what it called an “unexpected, inappropriate, and counterproductive decision” by the French government in providing “unequivocal and unreserved support” for the autonomy plan in Western Sahara within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.
This development comes at a time when relations between Algeria and France are experiencing increasing tension, while Paris seeks to strengthen its ties with Morocco.
The new French position, if confirmed, is expected to elicit varied reactions on the international stage, especially given the sensitivity of the Sahara file and its regional and international complexities.
It’s worth noting that the Sahara issue remains a subject of dispute between Morocco and the Polisario Front, supported by Algeria, while the United Nations seeks to find a political solution that satisfies all parties.
