In an exclusive interview with the Algerian website “La Patrie News,” US Ambassador to Algeria Elizabeth Moore Aubin reaffirmed the United States’ steadfast position on the issue of the Moroccan Sahara.
Ambassador Aubin stated that President Biden has not changed his predecessor Donald Trump’s declaration regarding the Sahara, referring to it as a “historical fact.” She added that the United States has supported Morocco’s autonomy plan since 2008, considering it a viable solution.
The US Ambassador clarified that Washington’s perspective on this matter has not changed in nearly two decades, while also emphasizing the need for a solution under the auspices of the United Nations.
Aubin stressed that the Biden administration “continues to consider Morocco’s autonomy plan as serious, credible, and realistic, carrying an approach that can meet the aspirations of the people of the Sahara.”
However, the US Ambassador acknowledged the complexity of resuming the political process at the United Nations level, despite the appointment of Staffan de Mistura as the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy. She noted that de Mistura has not yet succeeded in relaunching the roundtable process initiated by his predecessor, Horst Köhler, in 2018.
This statement once again confirms the US position supporting Morocco on the Sahara issue and dispels any hopes the Algerian regime may have had for a change in this stance.
The interview comes as a reaffirmation of the American support for Morocco’s position on the Sahara issue, effectively dashing any hopes the Algerian regime might have harbored for a reversal of this stance.
