The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Malawi, Nancy Tembo, reaffirmed on Tuesday in Laayoune her country’s support for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and its sovereignty over all its territories, including the Sahara region.
This came during a press conference following her talks with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Nasser Bourita, on the occasion of the first session of the Joint Cooperation Committee between the two countries.
Tembo emphasized that Lilongwe reiterates its full support for the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative, considering it the only credible, serious, and realistic solution. She also praised the efforts of the United Nations as the exclusive framework for reaching a realistic, practical, and lasting solution to the Sahara conflict.
For his part, Bourita expressed his appreciation for the wisdom of Malawian diplomacy, thanking Lilongwe for its constant and firm support for Morocco’s territorial integrity. He pointed out that this support is manifested in the opening of a Malawian Consulate General in Laayoune in July 2021, and Malawi’s participation in January 2021 in the Ministerial Conference to Support the Autonomy Initiative under Moroccan sovereignty, at the invitation of the Kingdom and the United States of America.
These statements come to confirm the depth of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Malawi, and strengthen the Moroccan position on the Sahara issue in the African and international arena.
