In a statement issued after a cabinet meeting, the Spanish government reiterated its firm commitment to continue its cooperation with Morocco in the fight against forest fires, based on the bilateral agreements between the two countries.
It was agreed to adopt an action plan for 2024 focused on strengthening efforts to prevent and combat forest fires. This plan defines the mechanisms for the State General Administration’s support to regional firefighting mechanisms, emphasizing a unified, comprehensive and coordinated approach to confront this phenomenon.
Data from Morocco’s National Agency for Water and Forests (ANEF) showed a significant decrease in forest areas affected by fires during 2023, as the area affected decreased to 6,426 hectares, compared to 22,760 hectares in 2022, equivalent to a 70% decrease.
The highest number of fires was recorded in the Tangier-Tetouan-Hoceima region, with 182 fires affecting 1,620 hectares, accounting for 40% of the total number of fires in the country.
This renewed cooperation exemplifies the strong bilateral relations between Morocco and Spain. In 2023, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Alvarez emphasized the excellence of relations between the two countries, describing them as “at their peak”.
The renewed cooperation in combating forest fires emphasizes Morocco’s proactive stance in promoting international cooperation to address common environmental challenges, reflecting the commitment of the two countries to protect their natural resources and promote sustainable development.
