The Republic of Guinea reiterated its firm support for the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco as a realistic and reasonable solution to settle the Sahara dispute, during the regular session of the 24th Committee in New York.
Ambassador Paul Goa Zoumanigui, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Guinea to the United Nations, emphasized the conformity of the autonomy initiative with the principles of international law, the UN Charter and relevant UN resolutions, considering it the best way to reach a peaceful and mutually acceptable political solution.
Goa Zoumanigui called for the resumption of the “Round Tables” process as soon as possible, with the participation of the same previous parties (Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, Polisario), pursuant to Security Council Resolution 2703.
He stressed the need to reach a realistic and lasting political solution to this dispute, emphasizing his country’s support for the ongoing political process under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General.
The Guinean ambassador also praised the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to the Moroccan Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, to relaunch the political process.
In another context, Goa Zoumanigui highlighted the opening of a consulate general in the city of Dakhla, emphasizing that this comes to strengthen the relations of friendship and cooperation with the Kingdom of Morocco and to establish its active presence in the region.
He also praised Morocco’s holding of legislative, collective and regional elections in 2021, including in the Sahara, with wide participation by the people of the region, considering this a manifestation of democracy and transparency.
The ambassador praised Morocco’s respect for the ceasefire and its “close” cooperation with the United Nations Mission for the Maintenance of the Ceasefire (MINURSO).
The “alarming” humanitarian situation in the Tindouf camps was not lost on Zoumanigui, who called for the need to register and count the population held in these camps, in accordance with the requirements of international humanitarian law.
Guinea’s support for the autonomy initiative and its renewed commitment to the UN-led political process is a reaffirmation of the Kingdom of Morocco’s growing position at the international level and a strong support for its realistic and reasonable proposal to resolve the Sahara issue.
This support constitutes an additional incentive for the United Nations and the international community to advance the political settlement and achieve a just and lasting solution to this dispute, ensuring respect for the rights of all parties concerned.
